Two childhood friends are suddenly brought together on opposing sides of the Nazi regime. One of the friends, a Jew, went on to become a doctor. The other joined the Hitler youth and is the Commandant of a concentration camp. Old friends collide, when the Commandant orders his former friend to perform fatal experiments on his own people - the Jews. The Jewish doctors only escape from his inner turmoil is through music - which the Commandant forbids in an attempt to assert final control over the doctors defiance.
