The year is 1558. In England, a struggle for the throne begins between Elizabeth Tudor, a Protestant, and Mary Stuart, a Catholic. Meanwhile, Ned Willard returns to Kingsbridge after a year's absence and soon learns that his family is on the verge of bankruptcy, and his beloved Margery is about to be married off to another man. A ball is being held at the Earl of Shiring's castle, during which several key events will unfold for the town's future. In Paris, Pierre Aumande, a petty conman employed by the House of Guise, tracks down Protestants and ingratiates himself with the printer's daughter, Sylvie Palot.
