Téarma Iomlán is set in a possibly not-too-distant dystopian future in which the anti-abortion movement has acquired full power over the judiciary. A special police force, Life Enforcement, has been established to locate and arrest women who have become pregnant and are exhibiting intent to end their pregnancy. Once in custody, they are brought before a judge at the Life Court of New Dakota, to determine guilt and to impose confinement for a period of nine months, until birth. There are many such facilities, Sanctuary is better than most. This is a surrealist-noir story of two life-long friends, Paula and Beth, who are swept up in the fast moving social and legal changes of the time. Paula is preparing to visit and stay with Beth, who has illegally acquired the medication to end her unwanted pregnancy. But it is Paula who finds herself at Life Court, before Judge White and her assistant Mr. Orange.
