In 2000 Algiers celebrated the millennium of its foundation, in the 10th century, by the Zirid king Bologhine Ibn Ziri, during the reign of the Berber Zirid dynasty from 945 to 971. A thousand years ago, Djazaïr Beni Mezghena was founded on the territory of the Beni Mezghena tribe, on the ruins of the Roman city of Icosium, built on the site of an ancient Phoenician trading post. For centuries a tribal nation, it would take a century of French colonial rule to achieve this realization. But on the eve of the insurrection, the country is already a strong nation.
