Shaga is one of them and has lived in secrecy since the beginning of the era. By a twist of fate, she meets Ushiwaka, a young boy who must become a Buddhist. To do so, he must travel to Ooshu Prefecture, however the journey is fraught with danger. Shaga complies and supports her new protégé in a quest filled with a sense of duty, sadness, and above all, love.
