Merriman and Will fly on the great white mare towards Windsor. They are pursued by the tornado of the Dark, the Rider at its centre. Above the Great Park they descend towards an ancient oak, under which waits Herne, the ancient hunter. He is waiting for them. Tonight he will ride for the first time in a thousand years. Dismounting, Will sends the horse towards him. And John Smith hands Will the horned carnival mask sent to him by his brother Stephen in Jamaica. Will takes it to Herne, who puts it on, and his eyes flash with a pitiless impulse to revenge. Finally, Will shows him the Signs, and the hunter summons his hounds - an endless pack of huge white animals ghostly in the half light. But even at that moment the Dark breaks through the old ways guarding the Great Park, making for Will, a deadly spinning pillar coming at him alone. The Rider thinks he's won, but then the hunt strikes, and the Dark is put to flight. As the Rider flees, he seems to throw something from his saddle that lands at the base of the oak. It is Hawkin, mortally wounded. He begs to be released from a long and painful life and with a gentle look to Will and a long, unfathomable, look to Merriman, dies.
