Will returns from the Manor to find his sister Mary has disappeared. No one knows where she's gone, but Will is sure the Dark have taken her. He goes out to find her in the driving rain and melting snow. The Signs cast a light to guide him and they show a land that has begun to flood. The road has become a river. Out of the gloom emerges John Smith. Will is full of questions - about Mary and Merriman - but John has only one instruction: That Will must follow the light of the Signs and bring the white horse to the Hunter. And the great white mare that first saved Will from the Rider appears, and he mounts her. And the horse carries him over the flooded land, to the Thames. In the middle of the river is an island. Hawkin and the Rider are there. And so is Mary, who has been bewitched - she'll do anything the Rider says. He offers her to Will in exchange for the Signs, but Will refuses, and so he commands her to leap into the rising torrent. But Will calls on the powers of Light, and Mary is saved and the Rider and Hawkin are swept away. Then lighting strikes, and the island ruptures, and from the fissure rises a ship bearing a long-dead king. In his hands is the sixth and final Sign, which Will claims as his own.
