December 20th. It's the day before Will's eleventh birthday and all he wants is for it to snow. With grey clouds hanging low over his home in the Thames Valley, promising a blizzard, and his large family in a festive mood, Will should be excited, but something's not quite right. The animals are acting strangely - the dog is barking, his rabbits are cowering in their hutch and the sky is full of wheeling rooks. On his way to Dawson's Farm to get some hay, Will even thinks he's being watched, as he catches sight of a hunched old man, scuttling into the trees. But if he hopes Farmer Dawson might snap him out of his unease with a warm smile and a friendly joke, Will is mistaken, as the man gives him a birthday present: an ornament made of black iron, a flat circle quartered by two crossed lines. It is the first Sign. And Will hardly knows it yet but his birthday will take him across the centuries, drawing him into an ancient struggle between the Dark and the Light. As he leaves Dawson's farm, the light of the shortest day is fading, and the snow is about to fall. The hunched old man is out on the road and the rooks are circling again. Will can feel it in his bones - the dark is rising.
