The plot of this two-act play is based on Greek mythology and Homer's epic, The Iliad. According to legend, Paris, a Trojan prince, has abducted Helen of Sparta. This abduction is said to have been the cause, or pretext, of a ten-year war between the Greeks and the Trojans. Giraudoux sets the action of his drama just hours before the declaration of war.
