Short, War |
In the unforgiving winter of 1944, Corporal Seth Weisman, an American Jewish soldier anticipating fatherhood, is stationed in the Ardennes forest with the inexperienced 106th Infantry Division. As he reflects on the future and the responsibilities awaiting him at home, Seth encounters a German Shepherd puppy, a quiet reminder of a beloved companion from his childhood.
The fragile calm is shattered when a surprise German assault erupts across the forest. In the chaos, Seth witnesses the violent deaths of his fellow soldiers and, while attempting to save the puppy, is knocked unconscious by an explosion. When he awakens hours later, wounded and alone, he realizes he is the sole survivor.
Seeking shelter, Seth crawls to an abandoned foxhole where he discovers a severely wounded German soldier, initially presumed dead, who turns out to be a boy barely older than twelve. What begins as a brief struggle slowly transforms into a fragile connection as the two share names, stories, and moments of humanity amid devastation. When a Star of David slips from Seth's belongings, the weight of identity and circumstance deepens their bond.
Faced with an impossible moral choice, Seth decides to risk his life to save the wounded enemy, fashioning a makeshift stretcher and dragging the boy through the frozen forest toward American lines, accompanied by the loyal puppy. As the forest closes in around them, the consequences of compassion in wartime unfold with tragic and lasting impact.
Decades later, the echoes of that encounter resurface, revealing how a single act of humanity in the midst of war can reverberate across generations.
