Semyon Grossman's son Kostya returns to Moscow after serving in the army and working at the construction of the Baikal-Amur mainline. He doesn't want to take advantage of his father's connections and gets a job at his store as a simple porter. Anya falls in love with him but their romance is cut short when he witnesses her work as a KGB agent. Luzhin begins to court Katya. He finds out that Grossman sends money regularly to a woman in Belgorod (she happens to be the mother of Katya and Anya). Luzhin sends his operative to Belgorod.
