José María Villa was born in the municipality of Sopetrán - Antioquia, on October 18, 1850. He entered the School of Arts and Crafts of Medellín and then the School of Engineering of the University of Antioquia. Later, thanks to the support of Pedro Justo Berrio, governor of Antioquia, he traveled to the United States and enrolled at the Stevens Institute in Hoboken, New Jersey.
